Vietnamese Culture

As one book title says: "Vietnam, country, not a war!". Due to the long and bloody war, Vietnam is often associated with the Vietnam war, that the French and US troops were involved in, but the fact that Vietnam has a rich cultural heritage most often gets lost.

When you speak a language, it's also helpful to understand the culture of the country and to be able to move around without too many stupid mistakes. Things that are normal to Westerners can be quite offensive to the local population. And why make mistakes, if you can read up and understand the basics within a few hours?

Vietnam - Culture Smart!: A Quick Guide to Customs and Etiquette

Culture and Customs of Vietnam

Written by a husband and wife team, with years of experience in Vietnam and its culture, this well developed text provides a detailed look at most of the major areas of Vietnamese culture and customs. Topic areas covered include Vietnamese history, cultural impacts of war and occupation, religion, literature, architecture, food and cuisine, family culture, festivals, and the arts. I would heartily recommend this book to families who have adopted from Vietnam or for anyone who is interested in a more complete understanding of Vietnam and its people.

What customers say about the Pimsleur Vietnamese audios:

I have always had good luck with the programs. I used Pimlseur to brush up on my French. This program, as with just about all Vietnamse language courses, is based on the Northern Vietnamese language. I have several friends from southern Vietnam and said that even with the (slight) differences, people will still understand you. You learn quite a bit about the language, and will end up with enough knowledge to take what you have learned and form your own phrases in conversations.
This program is not by anymeans sexest. What it does is place you in several situations such as: You are a young man greating a young woman, you are an older woman greeting an older man...e.t.c... One reviewer said that "chi" is used to address a younger woman...that is the northern way of addressing a woman. In southern vietnam, "em" is used and "chi" is used for older and "bac" for the grandmother type. These programs are wonderfull and I would highly suggest that if you want to learn a foriegn language, go with this program..you will not be sorry. -- Phillip Fitzlaff, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

If your like me and have struggled to master strange foreign tounges, look no further, this is mother of all language teaching systems. Over the years i've spent thousands of dollars trying to learn Japanese & Thai, the only thing i can say is that i wish i had discovered the Pimsleur system sooner. Three weeks later I have a vocabulary of about 150 words that i can mix and match to form coherant sentences, that my Vietnamese freinds can actually understand. The only problem is that only the compact verson is availiable, and i want more. You may say that compared to other programs this is expensive, but with the awesome results, its worth every penny. I am even considering buying the Full Pimsleur Thai course even though i'm fairly fluent in Thai as if's as good at the Vietnamese then it will improve my accent and grammar.  -- Pazz, Bangkok, Thailand
